Mind ur Marathi completes 1 year !!!!

Exactly a year before, when MindurMarathi.com came into existence, the common people like you and me  had no option but to learn Marathi from railway announcements , bus conductors’ rants , highway signboards and even sometimes from the annoying housemaid complaints. Some of our smart friends learned extra bit of Marathi from the ” Happy B’day” banners put up by the local chamachas for their local leaders. Because we never prefer to spend money on the useless things like learning a new Indian regional language.Other mainstream ways of learning languages such as reading books, joining language classes or becoming the paid members of  already existent websites were there but the willingness to explore those things had died long back when we were forced learn languages in our school days.

Okay.

So it was decided to give a try, for teaching Marathi online for free and doing some useful things on the internet.Initially it was a painful job. The  temptation of  teaching a language the way our school teachers have taught was huge. But it was resisted and the words like non-finite-and-verbless-subordinate-clauses-in- adjective-phrases were generously omitted. The lessons were wrote up keeping one rule in the mind : Number of Marathi words a reader learns in a lesson must be lesser than the number of times he/she smiles while going through the content of the lesson. So the drawings were made, exercises were put up  and relevant examples were given.Gradually the hard work paid off. You readers liked the content and enjoyed the process of learning.Your comments provided immense encouragement to develop the website and make the learning experience easier and funnier. Today, exactly one year after creating a tiny place for learning Marathi on this vast world of web , I can not help myself to tell you all people what this small website has achieved in one year.

Number of unique visitors till date : 100,410

Page views: 784547

Avg number of visits per month : 15038

    Dear Akshay,

I rarely write comments on the web but your work has forced me to break the rule. You are an excellent teacher with a wonderful grasp on human psychology. You mix humour and relevance in your lessons beautifully and you might have shown us the way to preserve our wonderful regional languages. I have always wanted to learn Marathi and not because someone wanted to shove it down by throat but because I believe language is one of the most powerful carriers of culture and staying in Maharashtra I wanted to understand the marathi culture. After years of frustration your site has been my savior. One suggestion : your email lessons are useful but to people who are with you at the level of the lesson. Will it be possible to have the entire course be delivered through email. So the person can subscribe and then they get the lessons emailed according to a schedule right from the first lesson. This would make it a lot easier. Anyways, fantastic work and do reach if you need any kind of support.

      Hi Gaurav,

You broke one more rule. No one has written as big comment as you have written on this website yet. These positive comments are a big driving force to keep this website on always improvement stage. Thanks a lot.

Coming to your doubt, see Gaurav, I have not made the any course for teaching Marathi. Whatever course I’hv made I have put in the lessons section on the website. The daily lessons you get everyday at your inbox, are prepared every day before 12′ oclk and then they are delivered. So it is not possible to send entire course through the website. At the best, I can provide the link of related lesson/grammar associated with the sentence I provide in the daily lesson and I think that I’ve been doing wherever required. In case you are finding a particular lesson difficult, you can always ask me for help.

      Thanks again and Regards
      Akshay.

Do you have a PayPal account? I think you should get one and stick a donate button on your website. Many people (including me) want to express my gratitude to you for setting up this website (and that too free of cost). It will also help in covering the cost of hosting and ensure that this initiative does not get shelved.

    Hello Akshay,

    Actually we should say,

    आपले खूप खूप आभार !

It was a pleasure to go through the Marathi lessons. I would like to stay in touch. I would like to learn some useful Marathi idioms and phrases.
If we are exposed to short stories (e.g. Panchatantra) we may be in a better position to speak Marathi with greater confidence.

    Again: आपले खूप खूप आभार !

    Nandakumar

    • Akshay says:

In one word your mission can be described as fantastic. I had made some attempts to learn the language in the easiest way, but was unable to get any useful guidance. Then I put a request in the facebook for help. One of my facebook friends hinted the name of your site. I feel that your style of teaching the language is exactly the same I was looking for. Your method of giving illustrations of real-life examples and handling of dry grammar in a very simple and lively way makes the learning exciting for the learners.

We Indians are very eager to learn foreign languages but not willing to learn the languages of our neighbors. If we can make it a habit of learning Indian languages other than our mother tongue, we can come closer to each other. Simple and straight-forward language learning course like yours can come in very handy for the sake of national integration as well. Actually many words are either common or very similar in all the languages and so after a little grasp of the elementary grammar and the syntax one begins to feel the kinship between his mother tongue and the process of learning gets momentum. I personally feel from the core of my heart that we should learn at least one Indian language other than the mother tongue.

I appreciate your effort of helping us in learning marathi. I am an occasional visitor of maharashtra and eager to learn the language of the soil to know the people and culture of the state. It can never be possible without the knowledge of the local language. I have only one suggestion to make. As most of the learners have knowledge of Hindi, your effort may be more effective if a Hindi version is made in parallel with the existing English one.

Thank Akshay for all the hard work you have put in to make this amazing website that makes learning Marathi fun :-)

    Cheers!
